two new chicks!

Day before Christmas, we discovered two little chicks, newly hatched by a rather scatty black, mother hen. Was it worth the effort?! Another smaller hen recently produced 12 gorgeous chickens and was a great mother, fussing and caring for her brood, who have now graduated to the big hen house. Meanwhile, the latest chicks are scuttling around in our forest at the top of the garden, sometimes being stood upon by mother hen, who doesn’t appear to have many mothering skills, such as clucking to her chicks and showing them how to get on in life. My grand-daughter Vienna, wanted to take the chicks from the careless mother hen and look after them herself, but as she has now gone away on holiday, it didn’t eventuate. There is one black chick and one yellow one, a real story-book pair! HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM HAPPY HENS!

Happy Hens Made the Front-Page

Happy Hens made the front-page banner of the O.D.T. the Saturday before Christmas! With the caption "What's so special about Otago." (as if we didn't know)

Otago Museum have launched a new exhibition featuring icons, chosen by the public, of the things they "cherish" most about Otago. We are thrilled to be so "cherished" by Otagoites - thank you!

The exhibition is on-to until the end of February.

It's pruning time and it's balmy weather and we've been pruning wings of some balmy hens! The feathered friends seem to be flying all over the place, escaping on the Autumn breeze!. I found a pretty little Araucana hen on a neighbours verandah roof. There's a sound of roosters crowing around the village, heard any time of day, which sets the dogs barking- becoming quite a noisy little place!

On a recent visit to Wellington, I met a large flock of roosters and hens on the loose, in an open space in Island Bay. There was a mother hen with a clutch of tiny chicks who couldn't keep up with the flock, so she just down and covered them up!

Meanwhile, back at the Happy Hens studio, we've been working on some new ideas. Show you soon!

Steaming into 2007!

Happy New year!

We celebrated New Year’s Eve dancing to a jazz band on the heritage steam boat Earnslaw, cruising the Frankton Arm in Queenstown, along with 290 other passengers! At 10.30pm we were welcomed aboard with complimentery glass of wine and canapés throughout the voyage. Such a clear, still night, with a moon shining on the lake , it was a perfect way to greet the New Year. Just before midnight we pulled into the wharf and from the Earnslaw’s bow we had an elevated view of the huge crowd thronging by the marina and a spectacular view of the fireworks shot from boats on the lake beside us. It was an unforgettable New Years Eve celebration as Earnslaw gave a few loud blasts of its steam whistle to greet 2007. Cheers and keep on steaming!

Hello Happy Heners
The latest issue of the Happy Hen Newsletter is finally out and what a big one it was. We have started a Happy Hen forum where all our members can catch up and yarn about there Happy Hens or just whatever takes there fancy, we have made the mamouth switch from United States Dollars to New Zealand dollars, while at the same time dramatically lowering the everyday prices of our ceramic hens. What a month!

This month we have also finally added the Black Ancona to the website shop, the Black ancona is the inspiration for many of our fun coloured hens and is one of our most popular breeds we hope that you enjoy it.

friends took a trip to "Sutton Tors",
near Middlemarch.

Briar bushes, with their gorgeos red rose-hips, made a pretty perch on the calm winter day.

Sitting in the tussock, got them talking about nests, but Marmaduchess had something else on her mind................

The Adventures of Marmaduchess

After The Traction-Engine Rally,
Marmaduchess's ruffled feathers were hardly settled before she plunged into more excitement at the discovery of a tree laden with golden apples, but these were golden quinces, not apples and were too hard and bitter even for a smallest peck.

Never one to sulk and not wanting to waste a new adventure, Marmaduchess decided the fragrant quince made a novel perch, where she gossiped with her little friend in the sun. Here they are a-top the golden quince.

Meanwhile, back in Yvonne's kitchen quince jelly was sparkling in the jars!

Introducing Marmaduchess, our roving Happy Hen, who took the three little Easter hens to visit the biggest traction-engine rally in the Southern Hemisphere, at Rangiora.

As happy as ever, they perched on this custom-made traction engine, showing their colours to everyone's delight.

Hello Everyone

The new Happy Hens Newsletter is out with all our Easter specials, also our website is being updated on a weekly basis with so many new and old Happy Hens finally making it to the web. We have been a bit slow keeping up with this new information age but we are getting there. I am hoping to encourage Yvonne the creator of Happy Hens to write you all a weekly blog about the comings and goings here at Happy Hens, so keep watching this page.

Recently we added the Peony Hens to the website, they look great and are selling faster than we can paint them. Also we have the Millennium Rooster and our now regular feature of three little hens. But just yesterday I finally got all of our brights listed, they are beautiful fun bright coloured versions of the Happy Hen Black Ancona.

Keep an eye out for the new Happy Hen Fabric range including Tea Cosies, Oven Mits, Fat Quarters and much more.

The first happy hens newsletter in quite a while went out today. We were all quite excited as it announces not only the new advent of this blog but also the new happy hen nursery set. Year of the Rooster
We’ve had a busy productive year, hope you’ve all had the same! A friendly reminder that “2005, Year of the rooster,” ends in February—not too late for our special, limited edition Millennium rooster or our usual resident roosters, including the mini-roo.

It's Peony Time!
Yes it’s peony time and we’ve been enchanted with these huge gorgeous blooms. Watch out for the blue-eyed hens in peony colours in the near future!

Recently we had a surprise visit from one of the world renowned Bird Flu specialists, who was very pleased with his Happy Hen purchases - We have the right sort of hen.
